Hey Doc! What can I eat with braces?!

One of the first and most important questions we're asked at The Ortho Spot is what can and what can't you eat with braces. As a general rule, you will want to avoid hard foods, sticky foods, and foods high in sugar. Hard foods can break or damage wires and braces. Sticky foods may get caught between braces and wires or may pull the braes off the teeth. Foods high in sugar may cause tooth decay and permanent white spots on the teeth. Not taking care of your braces often lead to common problems you can often avoid.

Examples of sticky foods to avoid with braces:

  •  Gum

  •  Taffy

  •  Licorice

  •  Starbursts

  •  Tootsie rolls

  •  Caramels

Examples of hard foods to avoid with braces:

  •  Ice

  •  Nuts

  •  Hard taco shells (break them into small pieces)

  •  Hard breads and crusts (like pizza, bagels, etc)

  •  Corn on the cob (cut off the cob before eating)

  •  Apples, carrots, pears (cut into thin slices before eating)

  •  Hard chips

  •  Jolly ranchers

Examples of sugary foods to minimize:

  •  Soda

  •  Gatorade

  •  Sweetened tea

  •  Kool-aid

  •  Ice cream

Please refrain from nail biting, pencil and pen chewing, and chewing on other foreign objects. This may cause loosening of the appliances. It is important to care for your braces by regularly checking for bent or loose braces and wires. Call our office if you notice any of these problems.
